Equine Summer Photoshoots: My Top Tips

Summer is the most popular time for equine photoshoots, so I wanted to share a few thoughts and tips to help you get the most out of your session. With a little preparation, you can make sure everything runs smoothly and you come away with images you absolutely love.

1. Flies!

There will be flies, and there will be lots of them so bring that fly spray for both you and your horse. The last thing we want is your horse getting irritated or distracted. I also find that early morning photoshoots help avoid the worst of the flies (and the heat), making for a much more relaxed experience all round.

2. A drink

It may seem obvious, but standing in the sun can be surprisingly dehydrating, and it’s easy to forget to bring water. Have a drink on standby for both you and your horse, and we can pause for regular breaks.

3. Sun cream

The only lasting memory you want from your photoshoot is beautiful images, not sunburn. Apply sun cream before we start and top it up if needed, especially during longer sessions.

4. Treats

Whatever the weather, a little bribery never hurts! Treats can be a great way to reward your horse and keep them engaged. They’re also handy for grabbing attention when we need those perfect alert ears.

5. Help!

Bring a helper, it makes a huge difference. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or yard mate, having someone there to hold your horse, pass you things, fix your hair, or wave arms around behind the camera to get your horse’s attention is invaluable. I have a waver of arms on standby (he's called my husband!).

6. Outfit choices

Think about what you’re wearing ahead of time. Neutral tones, soft colours, and simple patterns tend to photograph beautifully and won’t distract from you and your horse. Avoid large logos or anything too busy. Bringing a second outfit can also add variety to your gallery.

7. Grooming matters

A clean, well-groomed horse makes all the difference. Give your horse a good groom beforehand, wipe their eyes and nose, and consider a quick tail brush and hoof oil for that extra polish. The little details really stand out in photos. (Tip wipes may be your best friend)

8. Tack and equipment

Check your tack is clean and well-fitted. If you prefer a more natural look, we can often work without tack or use a simple headcollar, leather is always best. But we'll discuss all this beforehand, particularly about the style you’d like.

9. Location

Summer gives us beautiful light and vibrant backdrops, from golden fields to shady woodland. Think about what kind of setting you love, and we can plan accordingly. If possible, choose somewhere your horse feels relaxed and familiar.

10. Relax and enjoy it

Finally, try to relax and enjoy the experience. Horses pick up on our energy, so the calmer and more positive you feel, the better it will go. Some of the best photos come from natural, candid moments, a quiet cuddle, a laugh, or simply standing together.

A summer photoshoot should be a fun and memorable experience for both you and your horse. We can create something really special together.
